At least 13 people perish and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
