Colombian President Warns 'I Shall Take Up Arms Once More' if US Invades.

The US President along with President Gustavo Petro have escalated the tone of their exchange, further raising tensions between the two countries following American military units struck Venezuela to remove President Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He operates narcotics facilities and processing labs and is not going to be doing it very long," Trump remarked.

Escalating Tensions coupled with Allegations

Talking to the press on Sunday, the American leader threatened analogous military action towards the South American nation, asserting the nation faces serious problems and led by an unwell individual who enjoys creating narcotics and trafficking it to America."

Although Colombia stands as the globe's biggest cocaine-producing country, there is no evidence that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly involved in the business.

A Frayed Relationship

This nation was historically a staunch collaborator of the United States in the fight combating drug cartels and enjoyed wide political approval in Washington, yet ties have soured significantly following Trump assumed the presidency.

Colombia’s drug trade is mainly overseen by illegal armed groups including the Golf Clan, the ELN guerrilla group and breakaway groups of the former Farc guerrillas, the majority of whose members disbanded after a landmark accord.

Colombia's Defiant Rebuttal

In response to a query if military intervention comparable to Venezuela was on the cards against his country, Trump responded: "That seems like a good idea to me personally."

President Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who left armed struggle in the last century, rejected Trump's claims. "I am no illegitimate nor am I a drug trafficker," he declared.

"He comments without information. End the false accusations," he expressed online.

"If they [the US] bomb peasants, they will transform into thousands of guerrillas in the mountains. And should they arrest me, whom a significant portion of the population loves and respects, they will unleash the powerful force of the populace," he admonished.

From Guerrilla to President

He passed a period in his early life participating in the left-wing M-19 armed organization but is not believed he did not participated in combat. Upon leaving the group, he participated in writing the nation's constitution in the early 90s and later became a prominent senator. He was mayor of the Colombian capital prior to his election the nation's highest office.

"I made a vow to abstain from using a gun ... but for Colombia I would take up weapons once more," he said.

Heightened Measures along with Broad Rejection

Minister Pedro Sánchez reported that Petro's security detail had received additional support.

Many among Colombia’s conservative opposition have expressed support with Trump's stance, yet figures from all sides of the ideological divide have condemned the notion of an invasion on Colombia.

Bilateral and Economic Strains

American authorities withdrew the president's entry visa following he encouraged American soldiers to refuse orders that violate law. In October, the US enacted economic restrictions on Petro, his spouse and several key allies.

At the same time while America bolstered its forces near Venezuela and striking vessels thought to carry drugs to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, the US executed strikes on maritime targets off the Pacific coast adjacent to Colombia.
