Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead after three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
